In Aleppo, damage to healthcare and water and sanitation infrastructure, compounded by displacement, has increased vulnerability to infectious diseases. Infection prevention and control (IPC) capacity remains limited, with gaps in the early detection and systematic tracking of infections.
Under AFS’s Regular Allocation 3 Envelope 2, national partner Syria Relief & Development (SRD) is using a portion of its US$ 826,654 grant to strengthen IPC across 19 public and private health facilities in Aleppo. In coordination with the Ministry of Health and Aleppo Health Directorate, SRD is providing targeted training for healthcare workers alongside the provision of laboratory equipment and supplies.
In January 2026, SRD’s specialised IPC technical team conducted a three-day IPC training for 60 healthcare professionals at Dar al-Tawleed Government Hospital in Aleppo. The training covered prevention of healthcare-associated infections, focusing on reducing the risk of transmission between patients and preventing healthcare workers from becoming a source of infection. The training covered occupational safety standards, sterilisation and disinfection, correct use of personal protective equipment, and medical waste management.
“This training represents a critical step in strengthening infection prevention systems in Aleppo. By equipping healthcare workers with practical IPC knowledge and familiarising them with the early warning systems for infections, we are building a sustainable foundation for safer healthcare delivery and effective outbreak response”, said Dr Ahmad, SRD IPC Supervisor.
