The Aid Fund for Northern Syria (AFNS) has been highlighted in a paper by the International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA) that discusses the opportunities, challenges, and mitigation strategies for scaling up the humanitarian response in Syria to support long-term recovery and localisation following the fall of the Assad regime.
The report calls on donors to prioritise pooled funding mechanisms, including the AFNS, that directly support Syria-led organisations and NGOs, recognising AFNS's crucial role in promoting a locally-led transition in Syria. Since its inception, 74% of AFNS's funding has been channelled to local NGOs. With the launch of AFNS's Anchor Organisation pilot under Regular Allocation 3, the Fund aims to further empower and build the capacities of Community-Based Local Actors (CBLAs), ensuring sustainable, and community-driven recovery.
