In northwest Syria, 1.7 million children are growing up in some of the world’s most challenging circumstances. Despite these difficulties, the regions’s youth hold the key to its future prosperity.
Recognising this potential, AFNS and its partner Women’s Support Association (WSA) are helping young people use technology to tackle global challenges. With a US$500,000 grant from AFNS, WSA operates the women’s support SALAM 3 Center in Hazano, which offers a unique robotics training programme for young women.
One participant, 12-year-old Alaa, dropped out of school due to bullying. Through the programme, she learned about robot components, sensors, and engines. Alaa not only acquired technical skills but also regained her confidence by building a "Welcoming Robot" that distributes brochures to guests using an ultrasound wave sensor. To date, WSA’s initiative has supported 3,253 children and youth.
