On 10 April, Dr Reem Enderun, AFS’s Partnerships and Delivery Manager and Health Technical Expert, visited the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Ali Bajliyeh, the only PHC facility in the under-served area of Tell Abiad subdistrict in northern Raqqa governorate. The centre is supported by AFS partner Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), which received a US$ 1.8 million grant under the Fund’s second Regular Allocation in March 2024. The facility plays a vital role in serving an estimated 40,700 people. This was the AFS’s first grant in the Ras Al Ain and Tell Abiad (RAATA) region.

With support from AFS, SAMS provided the centre with critical resources, including equipment and medicines. This enabled the PHC to meet 60% of medication needs, strengthen its diagnostic capacity, and cover staff salaries and operational costs across internal medicine, paediatrics, nutrition, reproductive health, and non-communicable diseases departments. SAMS also furnished the PHC’s dental clinic—which is the only in the Ali Bajliyeh area providing free dental services—with essential equipment including a new patient chair, lighting, and drills.

Through this project, Ali Bajliyeh PHC has provided over 29,190 consultations, improving comprehensive healthcare access for more than 31,900 people over the course of 12 months. “We serve around 30 to 45 patients daily, and the new equipment have made diagnostics more efficient and accurate”, said Abdullah, a medical staff member at the PHC.
